NY2LASPORTS.COM - WHITE LEADS VINCENT PAST CENTRAL
Nick Aiello — Contributing Editor - NY2LASPORTS.COM
The Milwaukee Vincent Vikings traveled through blistering cold weather for a Tuesday night date against the Bulldogs at West Allis Central which turned out to be a dandy. Behind steady effort from senior Tony Helm, an offensive lift off the bench from up and coming sophomore Jerome Cummings and great guard play from fellow sophomore Brandon Key, the Bulldogs led most of the first half, forcing Vincent to bear down to earn a small lead going in to the intermission.
Rising junior, Marcus White led the way for the Vikings as senior Deonte Burton and sophomore guard Malik Brown also continued attacking throughout the game. Key and White went back and forth with some big buckets in the fourth quarter, where the Bulldogs regained a lead with 2 minutes remaining. However, after Central failed to connect on three straight possessions, Vincent seized its opportunity and finished the game on a 13-0 run, snagging a couple offensive rebounds and knocking down free throws to win, 73-63.
Brandon Key – 2015 – PG – West Allis Central H.S.
5’11 – Milwaukee, WI
Key was explosive against a well-rounded Vikings defense that tried to cut off the interior from the guard and limit his ability to get others involved. Key still managed to tally up 6 assists, getting his squad out in transition, outworking the press and displaying excellent court vision throughout the game. The talented sophomore poured in 22 points dropping in floaters, mid-range pull-ups and a triple. The area he perhaps most improved was at the free throw stripe, sinking all nine of his attempts.
Marcus White – 2014 – F – Milwaukee Vincent H.S.
6’6 – Milwaukee, WI
White again made his opponent pay for sending its defensive attention in Burton’s direction. The junior is really coming into his own this season, scoring from everywhere, as well as hitting the glass hard, pulling in 6 rebounds. White knocked in timely basket after timely basket, making 4 three-pointers and finishing with a game-high 24 points. His continued improvement and effort defensively will be paramount to the Vikings’ success the rest of the way.
Deonte Burton – 2013 – SF – Milwaukee Vincent H.S.
6’6 – Milwaukee, WI
The Marquette bound small forward was all over the court Tuesday night. Winding up with 15 points and 8 rebounds, Burton attacked non-stop offensively and made life difficult for Central defensively. His strength, size and athleticism coupled with White’s on defense, made going inside very challenging for their opponent. The senior had a sensational tip-slam early and a big block in the fourth to help rally Vincent both times. Burton’s presence on the court demands attention and he remains the integral force to the Vikings machine.
Malik Brown – 2015 – G – Milwaukee Vincent H.S.
6’1 – Milwaukee, WI
Brown is a young guard with nice potential. Though the sophomore must continue to develop his strength with the ball and defensively, he can be lethal shooting from the perimeter and has shown the ability to slash past defenders utilizing his quickness and instincts. Brown scored 11 points versus WAC.
Jerome Cummings – 2015 – G/F – West Allis Central H.S.
6’1 – Milwaukee, WI
The smooth, lanky sophomore had 8 points off the bench for the Bulldogs. He took some pressure off Key on the offensive end by draining some difficult shots after finding the open areas in Vincent’s defense. He made a couple big plays defensively from the help side against the Vikings and as his frame and determination develop, expect his overall play to become much more consistent.
Tony Helm – 2013 – G/F – West Allis Central H.S.
6’2 – West Allis, WI
Helm continues to be a solid contributor to the Central lineup, finishing with 7 points, including a three point bucket. However, it was his steady defense, being in the right place consistently and his rebounding that caused problems for the opponent this evening as he uses his body well to disrupt the opponent’s effectiveness.
