Win and move on. In the high school playoffs, you have one game to try to advance or the season ends with bitter sweet memories of hard work, dedication and grueling contests against other squads. Friday night fans witnessed one of those contests as #4 seeded host Oak Creek battled #5 seed visitor West Allis Central.
The game spent every last second off the clock to determine a winner. The two went back-and-forth with the lead throughout the first half, but Oak Creek’s stout defense and incredible control of the time-of-possession held Central to two 2nd quarter point and took a 16-12 lead into halftime with great play from senior forward Terrance Garner. However, Central came out of the break on the attack behind incredible guard play by 2015 point guard Brandon Key, junior shooting guard Ron Turkvan and senior guard Jequan Carson. Garner knocked down a late three-point shot for Oak Creek to tie the game at 27 and the two teams split buckets down the stretch. 2014 guard, Alex Medenwalt of Oak Creek, hit a pair of free throws with roughly 15 seconds left to take a 33-32 lead over the Bulldogs, but Key raced down court, made a swift move to free himself and buried a game-winning 8 foot floater off the glass with 7 seconds left (34-33) to move on against Milwaukee Hamilton in the Regional Final today at 4pm.
Brandon Key – 2015 – PG – West Allis Central H.S.
5-11 – Milwaukee, WI
Key struggled to find a rhythm early as he drew a couple quick fouls. But the sophomore remained patient against a team trying to take him out of Central’s offense, let the game break down and found spots to score and distribute expertly in the second half. Key’s game looked very mature in the second half locking down defensively, and his two “and-1” buckets in the fourth quarter gave Central leads before knocking down the game winning runner in the final seconds. He made big plays down the stretch and finished the night with 15 points (5-6 from the free-throw line) and 5 assists.
Terrance Garner – 2013 – F – Oak Creek H.S.
6-4 – Oak Creek, WI
Garner is a nice athlete with an incredible feel for the game. Patient, under control, and versatile, Garner kept Central’s defense guessing throughout the game, and was able to score from inside, knock down some perimeter buckets, and kick out to open teammates. The 6-4 senior concluded his career with a solid 10 points and an unrelenting effort to give his team the opportunity to win at the end.
Alex Medenwalt – 2014 – G – Oak Creek H.S.
5-11 – Oak Creek, WI
Medenwalt scored in a variety of ways Friday night. The junior guard was able to penetrate at time and finish at the basket, hit two big 3-point shots, and was 4 of 6 from the free-throw line, including two that gave Oak Creek a lead with about 15 seconds remaining. The lefty converted some big plays with ice in his veins against Central, and finished up with a game-high 16 points.
Jequan Carson – 2013 – G – West Allis Central H.S.
5-11 – Milwaukee, WI
Once again, senior Jequan Carson stepped up big for the Bulldogs playing steady and under control the entire game. His leadership on the court was evident as he helped will the defense to stops and then knocked in a pair of three’s and another deep jump shot late in the game for the Bulldogs. Carson wound up with 8 points on 5 shot attempts and 4 rebounds for the Bulldogs in the win.
