NY2LASPORTS.COM - WISCONSIN NEWS AND NOTES
Antonio Curro — NATIONAL RECRUITING DIRECTOR - NY2LASPORTS.COM
The boys WIAA State Tournament continues later this week as teams head to Madison looking to hoist the coveted gold ball. Indiana bound big man Luke Fischer looks to cap a stellar high school career at Germantown with a second consecutive championship but Milwaukee King, Oshkosh North, and Mukwonago have other ideas. We look at that and more in today’s news and notes…

(1) GERMANTOWN LOOKS TO REPEAT
The powerful machine that has become the Germantown Warhawks basketball team heads to Madison this week sitting at 26-0 and looking for its second consecutive Division 1 state championship. Indiana bound senior Luke Fischer has been stellar all season long averaging 21 ppg but the continued evolvement of junior lead guard Lamonte Bearden has been equally as important this year and that was evident first hand Saturday as Bearden put on a clinic in the Sectional Final win over De Pere. The Warhawks come at you in waves and their experience combined with their depth and ability to score inside, outside, and in transition make them a very difficult team to beat this week.
(2) WILSON LOOKS TO CAP CAREER ON A HIGH NOTE
Marquette bound 2013 PG Duane Wilson Jr. already has one state chip on his resume and he and his Dominican teammates head to Madison this week looking for more. Averaging close to 24 ppg this year, Wilson has had a stellar senior campaign filled with highlights and explosive performances. Wilson and sophomore big man Diamond Stone form a lethal 1-2 combo and they make Dominican the favorite to capture the Division 4 crown again.
(3) DIVISION 3 CHAMPIONSHIP IS MUST WATCH BASKETBALL
While the state tournament features some big names, the most competitive championship could come at the Division 3 level with all four teams capable of capturing the championship. Aquinas sits at 22-4 and is powered by Wisconsin bound senior Bronson Koenig looking for his state championship. A deep and talented Little Chute squad sits at 25-1 with UW-Green Bay bound Turner Botz and Kenneth Lowe. Lodi heads to Madison at 23-3 with a team the features four double figure scorers lead by sharpshooting junior guard Jordan Shea at close to 16ppg. East Troy makes its trip thanks to the strong play of senior trio in UW-Milwaukee bound brothers Brett Prahl (20.1 ppg) and Alex Prahl (11.5 ppg) as well as Army bound Nate Dodge (19.7 ppg). Every team brings a little something different to the table but what is the same is that each has depth, talent, and skill as well as the ability to take home the trophy on Saturday making for an excellent championship later this week.
(4) CAN ONALASKA REPEAT?
Iowa State bound sharpshooting guard Matthew Thomas has put together a sensational senior campaign averaging over 28 ppg and after a scintillating 41 point performance on Saturday in its Sectional Final win, defending Division 2 state champion Onalaska makes the trip to Madison again sitting at 24-2 looking for another championship. In a year that could see a number of repeat champions, Onalaska could very well have the the most difficult time repeating. Pulaski sits at 22-4 led by UWM bound senior Cody Wichmann at 15+ ppg and they also feature 2 other double figure scorers and are riding a 9 game winning streak; Stoughton steps into Madison at 18-8 with fast emerging sophomore big man Nick McGlynn (14.8 ppg) spearheading an attack that’s on an 8 game winning streak; and Wisconsin Lutheran makes the trip again at 23-3 led by senior guard Deiondre Cunningham (13 ppg) also on an 8 game roll. Thomas has the ability to take over the game at any point and time but each of the other teams roll into Madison red hot making for some intriguing possibilities at the D2 level.
(5) THE MILWAUKEE KING FACTOR
The Generals make the trip to Madison again with experience, depth, talent, and toughness and on paper they look like the biggest obstacle to Germantown in Madison. Senior guard Austin Malone-Mitchell has been exceptional in WIAA tournament play since returning from a shoulder injury and teammates Chris Howell, Curtis Weathers Jr., Jemell Posey, and Montrell Hobbs have all played huge roles as well. Rather than purely rely on perimeter shooting the Generals have been more efficient offensively down the stretch and had better shot selection that they’ve combined with solid decision making and excellent effort to ride an 11 game winning streak to Madison. Head Coach Jim Gosz has done an excellent job molding this team all season long and their defense, ability to generate turnovers, win the 50/50 areas, and be efficient with their shot selection and decision making will be huge for them later this week. At their best they have enough toughness and heart and ability to present a serious challenge to Germantown later this week provided they take care of those areas mentioned.
