Day 1 of the 2010 NY2LA Sports Classic saw some exciting action in boys and girls basketball involving some of the top teams and prospects in the state of Wisconsin.  With day 2 set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. later today, here’s a recap of what went down yesterday and what to expect later today…

DAY 1 - BOYS RESULTS @ Marquette University High School

Game 1 – Milwaukee Pulaski 84 Brookfield Academy 46
A huge first half effort by senior PG Greg Moody put Milwaukee Pulaski ahead to stay as Moody rained 4 trey balls in the first half to push Pulaski ahead by double figures and they never looked back.  Junior forward Jameel McKay of Pulaski was unstoppable at times on his way to a game high 20 points and 15 rebounds while Moody wrapped with 19 points on the day.

Game 2 – Racine Case 64 West Allis Central 53
The hot shooting of Racine Case was the difference in this one and senior guard Mitchell Farr was the biggest culprit as the sharpshooting perimeter talent knocked down 5 trey balls on his way to a game high 20 points to lead Case to the victory.  Senior lead guard Najee Farr scored 13 points and grabbed 5 steals on the come up for Case in the winning effort.

Game 3 – Nicolet 54 Waukesha South 45
Huge second and fourth quarters along with the dominant interior play of senior big man Christian Williams proved to be too much for Waukesha South in this one.  Williams finished with 19 points while junior guard Corey Smith added 10 points in the winning effort for Nicolet.  Senior swingman Tim Woodford led the Blackshirts with 15 points in the losing effort.

Game 4 – Franklin 51 Whitefish Bay 45
Stifling defense and a big time performance from senior swingman Matt Krueger were the difference in this one as Franklin outlasted the Whitefish Bay 1-2 punch of Jamie Schneck and Ron Patten Jr. to pull out the victory on Friday.  Krueger hit 3 trey balls on his way to a game high 19 points and senior big added 10 points in the winning effort for Franklin.  Schneck scored 15 and Patten added 14 in the loss for Bay.

Game 5 – Dominican 63 Milwaukee Bradley Tech 44
The talented backcourt of Dominican was the difference in this one as junior Jamall Taylor took over the first half and sophomore Duane Wilson Jr. did much of the same in the second half to lead Dominican past Bradley Tech in the private/public school matchup on day 1.  Taylor led the way early with 9 of his 16 points during the first half and Wilson followed with 14 of his game high 19 points in the second half including 10 during the third quarter.  Junior guard Antoine Smith scored 12 points in the losing effort for Bradley Tech.

DAY 1 – GIRLS RESULTS @ Oak Creek High School

Game 1 – Waukesha South 38 West Allis Central 37
Game 1 of the NY2LA Sports Classic was anything short of a nail biter. Down 12 with 2:40 to go in the fourth, Junior Guard Nikki Plinska of Waukesha South hit a 3-pointer with 1.0 second to go to give Waukesha South a one point lead. Central was unable to inbound as time expired and South came away with the 38-37 win. South had balanced scoring from Junior Guard Eileen Van Horn who finished with 13 points, Senior G/F Katy Allen who finished with 10 points and Sophmore Center Lexi Weitzer who also finished with 10 points. Central was lead by Junior F Claire Hankins who finished with 14 points in the loss.

Game 2 – Dominican 49 Wisconsin Lutheran 43
Quick guard play of Domincan’s trio Deysha Smith-Jenkins, Mishayla Jones and Dilonna Johnson was too much for Wisconsin Lutheran in the second match-up of the day at the NY2LA Sports Classic. One of the state of Wisconsin’s top prospects in the 2012 class, Smith-Jenkins led Dominican with 14 points in the 49-43 win. Dominican’s Johnson (Junior) added 13 points and Jones (Sophomore) finished with 10 points.  Sophomore G Kelsey Frey was the only player on Wisconsin Lutheran’s squad who finished in double figures with 14 points.

Game 3 – New Berlin Eisenhower 32 DSHA 23
Division 2 defending state champs New Berlin Eisenhower and a pre-season #1 pick were able to get win #1 against a tough DSHA squad Friday afternoon. A close game up until the last 1:30, Eisenhower’s defense and free throw shooting gave them the 32-23 advantage. Eisenhower was lead by Jenny Weiland who finished with 9 points. DSHA got a good performance out of Senior Erin Levenhagen who finished with 16 points.

Game 4 – Milwaukee Vincent 65 Racine Case 64
No other girls program has been in more state championships and close games in the past few years than the Milwaukee Vincent Lady Vikings and that experience paid off big in this one. With 22 seconds to go in fourth quarter Sophomore G Brette Logic, sister of senior standout Samantha Logic, hit 2 free throws to put Case up by 1. Vincent unable to convert on the offensive end got a steal which was converted to a layup by Senior G/F Iesha Eaton as time ran out for the 65-64 victory. Vincent was lead in scoring by Senior G Tynika Rogers who converted on 3 3-pointers in the game to finish with 21 points. UW-Milwaukee recruit Sydney Howard finished with 19 points and Eaton with 12 points on the night. Logic, who is headed to the University of Iowa next year, led Case with 21 points. Junior F Jameeka Bouie also added 17 points for Case in the loss.

Game 5 – Nicolet 52 Oak Creek 40
Each of the past two years Oak Creek has ended Nicolet’s season in tournament play, but Nicolet exacted a little bit of revenge on Friday. The #1 team in the state Nicolet was able to hold off the Oak Creek Lady Knights in a 52-40 victory on Oak Creek’s home court. A solid effort from Nicolet’s 3 top 50 seniors was too much for Oak Creek. Gaby Bronson finished with 14 points, Ashley Green with 10 and Alex Cohen with 8 points. Junior G/F Maggie Wilke led Oak Creek with 9 points on the night.

DAY 2 - BOYS PREVIEW
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2010 - @ Marquette University High School

1:00 p.m. Nicolet vs. Madison West
Day 2 of the NY2LA Sports Classic will tip off Milwaukee native Keith Stewart bringing his Madison West program to the event for a matchup against 2011 big man Christian Williams and Nicolet.  Stewart’s Madison West squad is filled with some solid young talent and you can be sure that they’ll provide Nicolet with a solid early season test to kick off the second day of action.

2:45 p.m. Whitefish Bay vs. Racine Case
A solid contrast in styles could be the call of the day in the second game on Day 2 as big man Jamie Schneck leads the Whitefish Bay Blue Dukes against a quick and athletic Racine Case squad featuring Mitchell Farr, one of the top 2011 prospects in the state of Wisconsin.  Case has a variety of versatile weapons and Schneck provides a solid interior post presence for Bay that should cause problems for Case.

4:30 p.m. Milwaukee Vincent vs. Franklin
Milwaukee Vincent will take to the court on Saturday looking to take some positive steps forward after losing a couple of its top players to prep schools this fall.  A stern test awaits the perennial City Conference power as they will need to find a way to stop Franklin’s senior big man Nick Romanowski, expected to be one of the dominant performers this season in the state of Wisconsin.

6:15 p.m. Morgan Park (IL) vs. Milwaukee Hamilton
One of the feature matchups of the weekend without question, Illinois power Morgan Park heads to Wisconsin led by Louisville bound McDonald’s All-American candidate Wayne Blackshear for a matchup with one of the top teams in the state of Wisconsin in defending City Conference Champion Milwaukee Hamilton.  While Blackshear is the mostly highly regarded talent on the court, Hamilton has an abundance of talent as well despite the losses of two starters from last season who transferred to prep schools this fall.  The Wildcats of Hamilton will feature Iowa State bound senior wing Elgin Cook, ultra quick perimeter talent Giovanni Bray, junior big man Itavian Belcher, and another solid versatile wing in Haki Stampley.  While Blackshear drives the ship for Morgan Park, the Illinois power also features some solid young talent in sophomore 6-9 Xzavier Tayler and sophomore perimeter talent Billy Garrett amongst others.  You don’t want to miss what promises to be the matchup of the weekend in the state of Wisconsin as two of the best from the Badger state and Illinois take to the hardwood on Saturday night.

8:00 p.m. Wauwatosa East vs. Dominican
Another of the top matchups of the weekend looks to follow up a strong Illinois/Wisconsin battle with a strong in-state matchup between Tosa East and Dominican.  Tosa East offers up a couple of excellent prospects in junior forward Darrell Bowie and sophomore wing Anthony Carroll, a transfer from Tosa West who’s one of the toughest and most explosive scoring talents in the state of Wisconsin.  Mix in some solid young perimeter talent for Tosa East and they have a number of versatile prospects who can create problems for whoever they take the court against this season.  Dominican will counter with one of the top sophomores as well in lead guard Duane Wilson Jr. as well as senior Iman Johnson, junior guard Jamall Taylor, and junior perimeter talent Breon Jordan.  This one stands to be one of the most exciting matchups of the weekend with two excellent coaches on the sidelines, two great programs with tons of history, and two teams filled with some excellent prospects.

DAY 2 – GIRLS PREVIEW
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2010 - @ Oak Creek High School

1:00 p.m. Franklin vs. Mukwonago
As if Day 1 wasn’t enough, girls action continues on Saturday as Day 2 of the 2010 NY2LA Sports Classic tips off with a matchup between two solid powers in Franklin and Mukwonago.  Fresh off a 14-10 season a year ago, Franklin is led by seniors Taylor Atkinson (12.4 PPG) and Mariah Hill (10.2 PPG).  Mukwonago finished 15-13 a year ago and returns a young team led by sophomore guard Jenny Tuttle who averaged 6.2 PPG.  One piece to keep an eye on in this one is 6-3 junior forward Kendall Martenet (3.5 PPG) who could be called on to play a huge role this season for Mukwonago in the paint.

2:45 p.m. Arrowhead vs. Pewaukee
An upstart Arrowhead squad finished 10-13 a year ago for Coach Heidi Hamilton and they’ll be looking to improve on that this season with junior forward Jenny Smith (9 PPG) and senior guard Jessica Goetz (8.3 PPG) leading the charge for the Lady Warhawks.  On the flip side Pewaukee looks to keep things rolling after finishing 22-3 a year ago and losing to the eventual Division 2 state champion in New Berlin Eisenhower in the state tournament.  Pewaukee will need big seasons from returning juniors Jordyn Swan (11.8 PPG) and Emily Wirth (9.7 PPG).

4:30 p.m. Racine Case vs. Oconomowoc
Oconomowoc girls will make their debut in the NY2LA Sports Classic with a matchup against the preseason #2 Division 1 team in the state in the Samantha Logic and Jameeka Bouie led Racine Case Lady Eagles.  Oconomowoc is no slouch as veteran coach Arnie Kirchenwitz leads a team that finished 14-10 a season ago and returns junior guard Mandy Prom (13 PPG) and senior forward Kendra Brooks (9.5 PPG).

6:15 p.m. Milwaukee Vincent vs. Oak Creek
Another matchup of two top ten teams hits the hardwood on Saturday as well as City power Milwaukee Vincent takes on Oak Creek on Day 2.  Junior Sydney Howard and the experience of Milwaukee Vincent will need to play a big role in this one if they expect to get past a hungry and talented Oak Creek team that features senior Ashley Luke.

8:00 p.m. Nicolet vs. Beaver Dam
If not for a recent change, this game could easily pit the pre-season #1 and #2 teams in the state at the Division 1 level.  Alas, we’ll have to settle for a matchup between the pre-season #1 team at the Division 1 level and the pre-season #2 team at the Division 2 level due to the Golden Beaver move to the D2 level after soaring the state tournament at the Division 1 level last season.  Beaver Dam is also regarded as the #5 team in the area.  Bottom line, this is a huge matchup between two of the premiere teams in the state of Wisconsin this season.  All eyes in this one will be on the matchup between 6-5 senior Alex Cohen of Nicolet and 6-4 sophomore Kalyn Gebhardt (8 PPG) of Beaver Dam.  In addition to Gebhardt, the Golden Beavers returns an abundance of talent in senior Kaitlyn McIntyre (10.6 PPG) and junior guard Cady Roedl (10.8 PPG) amongst others.  Add to mix Nicolet standouts senior Ashley Green and junior Brittney Fair and you have a huge early season showdown for both teams regarded as favorites by many to capture the state championships in their respective Divisions.
