The
2007 NY2LA Sports Classic went off this weekend without a hitch and anyone
looking for a reason why Korie Lucious deserves serious consideration for the
McDonald's All-American game need only watch his performance in the 4th quarter
of the Milwaukee Pius XI game against Wauwatosa East where Lucious scored 14
points in the final 3 minutes to tie the game inside a minute before falling
64-62 when a last second attempt by Tyrone Gordon didn't go down. The
bottom line is when it mattered the most Lucious was a man among boys and that
performance could be a sign of things to come in what could end up being a
monster year by Mr. Lucious for Milwaukee Pius XI.
While
Jake Barnett led a very balanced attack for Wauwatosa East, it was the play of
09' SG prospect Eric Williams that may have been the biggest key for East.
Eric Williams showed glimpses last year of what may end up being a big time
career at Wauwatosa East and his 16 points including a big time 2nd half dunk
was a major factor in the Tosa East victory this weekend. More
importantly, Williams hard work this off season definitely is starting to pay
off and he should end up grabbing some Division 1 interest over the next couple
years with continued growth and development of his game.
Also, anyone questioning how strong Tosa East is this year, need only look at the balance and play of guys like Brice Powell, Jake Williams, Eric Williams this year. Tosa East is a serious contender to make it to Madison and should be very tough to beat this year if they continue to gel and play as a team. Powell and Williams are two of the most underrated players in Wisconsin and if Barnett can bring it game after game, Tosa East can expect a very big year with big time results!
Ryan Staege (Waunakee) was solid all weekend long and his 15 points against Milwaukee Madison and his play all weekend was a major reason why Waunakee is now 2-0 to start the year. Staege is one of the leading players for Conference Player of the Year in the Badger North Conference and his play this weekend against some quick athletic guards showed he should have another strong year this year.
Chauncey Williams (Milwaukee Marshall) second half performance against West Allis Hale was the breakout performance people were waiting for. The quick athletic Williams is one of the best outside shooters in the City Conference when he's hot and he dropped 17 points (including 4 3's) in a losing performance to West Allis Hale to show he'll be a force to reckon with this season. He also dropped 19 points the night before in a losing effort to Sussex Hamilton, which included 4 3's.
Speaking of West Allis Hale, look no further than 6'9" F/C Rick Wagner who dropped 20 points on Racine Case and then followed that up with 29 points against Milwaukee Marshall to lead them to a fast 2-0 start to begin the year. The most impressive thing about Wagner was his free throw shooting, which was a sore spot for Hale coming into the season. Wagner hit 15-17 free throws against Marshall and led the way in both games. Expect a big season from Wagner who says he wants to play football in college.

Kameron Cerroni of Sussex Hamilton was sensational against Milwaukee Marshall with 40 points as he put on a clinic that every young guard should watch. Cerroni got most of his points on mid range jumpers and free throws which taught a lesson to young players looking to jack up 3 after 3. His teammate Brett Meinecke also had a solid performance this weekend as he dropped 24 points in a losing effort to Milwaukee Northwest. Meinecke can really stroke the rock and has a scorer's mentality. Both he and Cerroni should be fun to watch over the next couple of years.
Speaking of Milwaukee Northwest, we have to give it up to Coach Hubbard and the performance of his team against Sussex Hamilton. Vontrell Seroyer and Lamar Wall were sensational all weekend but it was the play of Troy Sterling-Williams and Keith Townsend inside that was the key to the game. Milwaukee Northwest should make some Division 3 noise this season as they have some excellent quickness on the perimeter.
Tyrone
Gordon's performance Friday night for Pius XI was a major reason for their
victory against Milwaukee Madison. Gordon did an excellent job at point
guard position and also dropped 17 points including 2 3's and some excellent
passes as well.
Stephen
Jaskulske of Racine Case had a solid season opening performance with 20 points
against Rick Wagner and West Allis Hale. Unfortunately for Case, Rick
Wagner also hit 20 points and thanks to the outside shooting of Sam Kenseth (4
3's) Hale was able to escape with the victory.
