Today in part 3 of our look at the future of basketball in the Midwest we give the little guys their props as we look at some of the top young 6th grade (Class of 2014) prospects around.
This
article can't start without talking about 5'1" PG Tyus Mason
of Iowa. This little man can go in a major way already. He sees the floor well, has excellent playmaking ability, nice speed and
quickness, solid ball handling ability, and really has an excellent
understanding of how to create easy opportunities for his teammates.
That's not all though as Mason can stroke it to as his mid range jumper is solid
and he has a nice form to his shot so with added strength it's safe to assume
that he'll be able to stroke the trey ball too as he continued to mature and
develop. He's already one of the top 20 young Class of 2014 prospects in
the country and we expect big things from him as he continues to develop and
mature both physically and skill wise in the coming years. Bottom line is
that Mason has a chance to be special when it's all said and done.
Minnesota
is always strong with talent but with the Class of 2014 keep your eyes on
5'5" G Tyus Jones of
Minneapolis, MN. Tyus was one of the top campers at the
2006 Generation Next Regional Camp held in Minneapolis, MN and he is already
being regarded as the #1 Class of 2014 prospect in Minnesota. Jones can
simply do it all and you can expect to hear that name a lot in the coming years.
Tyus Jones grabbed the #21 spot on the board for the Class of 2014. The
funny thing is, when it's all said and done he might not even be the top one in
the family as his younger brother Tre Jones can really go to. True
story...during the Generation Next regional camp in Minneapolis, Tre was in
attendance as a 1st grader. Normally we keep it to a certain age but
everyone kept telling me Tre could really go so we got him a jersey and let him
go. Go and go he did as Tre was handling the rock, kicking dimes, and
attacking the rim game after game. Lot's of talent in that family so
expect to hear a lot in the coming years out of those two.
Talking
about talented families, look no further than the Chambers clan in Minnesota.
Everyone already knows about Class of 2012 8th grade PG phenom Siyani Chambers
but what some don't know is his younger brother 5'0"
PG Kamali Chambers of Minneapolis, Minnesota holds down the #66
spot for the Class of 2014 as well. The younger Chambers can handle the
ball, penetrate, create, and stroke the jumper as wel.
Add to the fact that he's lightning quick, hates to lose, and has a burning
competitive spirit when he takes the court, and it's easy to see why he could
very easily follow right in his brother's footsteps as a top prospect in the
coming years.
Wisconsin
boasts some top young players as well but while everyone already knows about top
10 Class of 2014 prospect Kevon Looney, many are also going to learn quickly
that 5'10" F/C Jonathan Carson is
no joke either. The dominant young big is physically mature right now and
has already shown the ability to dominate in the paint game after game.
While some may argue he's taller than most, they lose sight of the fact that
Carson has excellent rebounding instincts and shot blocking instincts already.
He also has some nice footwork for a young big and really has a shot to become
very good in the coming years if he continues to grow and develop his skill set.
When you add to the fact that he's one of the nicest kids you'll ever meet
Carson has already shown maturity beyond his years. Expect to hear a bunch
about him in the coming years.
