The 2009 NY2LA Sports Extravaganza went down last night inside Nicolet High School as as expected a host of solid performances were turned in by teams and prospects alike. Here's a re-cap of last night's event:Wisconsin Lutheran 75 William Chrisman 68
In what was arguably one of their top performances as a team last night, Wisconsin Lutheran made a huge statement against Chrisman after a hard fought victory against Oconomowoc Friday night. Sparked in part by the return to the lineup of Sr. PG Cedquon Holmes, Lutheran turned in a balanced inside outside attack that saw four players hit for double figures when it was all said and done. Andrew Rumler led the way for Lutheran with 21 while Flavien Davis was an absolute beast on both ends of the floor as he finished with 19 points. Davis came up big time and time again every time Lutheran needed a big play and his athleticism and ability to dominate inside 15 feet combined with the strong hard nosed interior play of Rumler were huge factors in the game all night. Tim Rotruck added 15 for WL while Cedquon Holmes key for 13 points including a couple of huge trey balls to spark a 3rd quarter run that put WL ahead to stay. Lutheran ran their record to 12-0 and is ranked #1 in the state of Wisconsin for Division 2 schools.
On the flip side for William Chrisman the 1-2 punch of Illinois State bound Justin Clark and Jon Ekey was as advertised as Clark was virtually unstoppable at times to the tune of 35 points while Ekey chipped in with 12 points on the come up. Clark attacked the rim, stroked the mid range pull up, and also knocked down 5 threes in the game. While Clark and Ekey did their part, the balance of Wisconsin Lutheran and the inability of Chrisman to have someone else step up consistently throughout the game proved to be too much when it was all said and done. Chrisman's record dropped to 10-9 on the season.
Brooks College Preparatory Academy 61 Milwaukee Madison 38
Defense was the story in this one as Brooks turned in an excellent lock down defensive assault throughout the night that proved to be way too much for Milwaukee Madison who struggled to get into a consistent offensive flow. The size, length, and athleticism for the young Brooks squad was impressive as they continue to get better every time they take the court and that was evident last night as they were dominant at times on their way to victory.
2011 PG George Marshall Jr. came up big with 25 but what was just as impressive was 6'7" 2011 F Kevin Gray who hit for 13 points. Marshall did most of his work off the dribble last night as he continuously was able to attack the rim and break down the Madison guards. The few times they backed off Marshall took advantage as he also knocked down a couple of trey balls as well. Marshall is one of the top 2011 prospects in the Midwest right now and he did nothing but further support that notion as he is really taking his game to another level right now. Gray was also impressive as the young talent hit the high school scene with a ton of promise and while he still has a ways to go, he displayed some excellent footwork and moves around the basket last night and was solid in creating problems on the defensive end as well. Brooks is one of the top young programs in the state of Illinois and last night's performance against a senior laden Madison team was another step forward in that development.
For Madison is was the 2nd poor performance in 2 nights as they really struggled to find a go to guy. 2009 PG Josh Brown led the way for Madison with 12 points but in the end the defensive effort of Brooks combined with the strong play of guys like Marshall and Gray was too much to handle and Brooks was able to pull away in the 2nd half for the victory.
Milwaukee Bay View 64 Brookfield Academy 56
This one was competitive down to the wire as Brookfield Academy turned in a strong performance against their City Conference opponent that fell short at the end. Bay View was led by Antoine Carlisle who hit for 19 points and Antoine Howard who dropped in 15 points on the come up. Howard continued to impress last night as in addition to his athleticism and ability to attack the rim that everyone knows about, he was also able to step up and knock down a couple of trey balls in big spots as well. While Bay View was not at the top of their game last night in part due to strong play from Brookfield Academy, they did just enough to escape with the victory.
Brookfield Academy did lose the game but while they didn't enter into the contest with the athleticism of Bay View or event the offensive firepower, they did turn in a quality effort on both ends and really gave Bay View fits all night until Bay View was able to pull away late in the 4th quarter. The balanced attack of Brookfield Academy combined with solid hustle and a good effort on the defensive end was impressive for a young team that could really develop into a solid squad by next season. Jake Stanczyk led the way for the Blue Knights with 12 points while Colin Wruck hit for 11, Jack Trunzo hit for 10, and 2010 F Marquis Jordan chipped in with 9 on the come up.
Top Performances of the Night
1. Justin Clark - William Chrisman
Despite a losing effort, Clark proved to be all that and a little more as he hit for 35 points behind an array of baskets. Clark attacked the rim, stroked the mid range jumper, and knocked down 5 trey balls and basically did whatever he could to keep Chrisman in the game all night long. The Illinois State bound Clark is a major dude and that was more than evident last night as he hit for 35 despite missing some wide open looks as he could've easily hit for 50 if he really got it going.
2. Flavien Davis - Wisconsin Lutheran
Davis continues to really step up his game and last night was evidence of that as he attacked the rim, attacked the glass, and really provided excellent leadership at times when WL needed it the most. Following up a 27 point 11 rebound performance on Friday and playing at less than 100 percent due to a fall on Friday night, Davis was unstoppable around the basket and also slammed home a couple at key points in the game. His continued development as a player and continued maturity as a leader on both ends has him primed to see his stock increase significantly over the next 6-8 months. Excellent floor game turned in last night by Davis.
3. George Marshall Jr. - Brooks College Preparatory Academy
The elite 2011 talent was impressive once again as he attacked the rim, stroked the trey ball, and really created havoc for Madison all night. Marshall has long been regarded as one of the top 2011 talents in the Midwest and his continued development as a floor leader and ability to take over offensively are impressive to watch. As he continues to develop his lateral quickness on the defensive end of the floor Marshall is going to be a beast in the coming years.
4. Andrew Rumler - Wisconsin Lutheran
A tough blue collar forward, Rumler is a "bruiser" type who physically dominated Chrisman all night long. He attacks the glass, finishes around the rim, but most importantly he gives a max effort on both ends and he's just the type of guy that teams hate playing against but definitely love to have in the lineup. He's not explosively athletic but Rumler has really developed into a major force for WL and is a key aspect of their attack every night. His emergence is one of the biggest reason's for Lutheran's success this year and he was sensational last night on both ends of the floor.
5. (Tie) Kevin Gray - Brooks College Preparatory Academy
The long interior 2011 prospect continues to develop and he really opened some eyes last night as he displayed solid instincts around the basket and the ability to finish and create problems on the offensive end. This young talent looks even taller and longer than he did in December and he's going to see his stock explode over the next 12-24 months. Really like his upside and potential as he finally looks like he's starting to realize his enormous potential that was laid on him when he first hit the prep scene at Brooks.
5. (Tie) Cedquon Holmes - Wisconsin Lutheran
Just as Rumler as stepped up this young guard has done much of the same and his return to the lineup last night after missing Friday's nights game was one of the major factors in Lutheran escaping with the victory. He's got nice speed and quickness, handles the ball exceptionally well, attacks the rim, and can stroke the trey ball. He's really one of the top 2009 sleepers in the state of Wisconsin and definite must see for schools looking for a change of pace PG who can make things happen on the offensive end. Holmes hit some key baskets and made some big time passes during a key 3rd quarter stretch that saw Lutheran take the lead for good.
5. (Tie) Antoine Howard - Bay View
While not as explosive as he was at the 2008 NY2LA Sports Classic in November, Howard played within the confines of the game and more importantly he showed he could hit the jumper as he knocked down a few mid range and a few trey balls to help Bay View escape with the victory. One of the top sleepers in the 2009 class for the state of Wisconsin, Howard has decent size for a wing, nice athleticism, good length, and the versatility to attack the rim and stroke the jumper.
