One of the top available point guards in the class of 2018, Xavier Castaneda (Chicago, Ill.) is beginning the final stretch run of his recruitment. With four official visits scheduled, Castaneda could be roughly a month from making his commitment.  Up first for the senior point guard was a trip to South Florida this past weekend.

“I know they have a great coaching staff,” said Castaneda. “They’re in a really good conference. They’re trying to make a push in these upcoming seasons.”

The following weekend, Castaneda will head to Kent State.  “They’ve been recruiting me since the beginning,” he said. “They made it to the tournament this year and that’s really big. They’re also in a good conference.”

Wichita State will host Castaneda the weekend of Sept. 23.  “They’ve been winning a lot, they’re very successful. They had Fred VanVleet, who is very similar to me.”

Valparaiso has the final scheduled official visit during the final weekend in September.  “Their coaches have been recruiting me for a while now,” he said. “They’ve kept it real from the beginning. They had a pro enter the draft last year.”

Castaneda has other offers from Iowa State, Missouri, UTEP, Milwaukee, Tulsa, Loyola (IL), Illinois-Chicago, Drake, and Miami (OH).  The 6-foot-1, 180-pound floor general is unsure if he’ll use his fifth official visit.

“We have to see if we can fit into our schedule,” he said. “Having my parents attend the official visits is the most important part to me.”

Two programs that could snag an official? Georgetown and Georgia Tech, who both have jumped in with late interest.  “They’re in great conference and will compete at a high level,” he said. “There’s also an opportunity to play there the first year.”

Castaneda plans to sign in November.  “I’m looking at the way I’d fit in with the team and the coaching staff,” he said. “Just a playing style that suits me. Academics are important to me as well.”

Castaneda played with Meanstreets during the travel season.
