NY2LASPORTS.COM - PATERSON CATHOLIC CLOSING ITS DOORS
Evan Flood — Contributing Editor - NY2LASPORTS.COM
Typically, NY2LASports.com reports about events or players when reports and articles are posted on this website. Today we offer some personal touch, as we receive word that one of the nation’s emerging basketball powers will close its doors at the end of the school year.
Founded in 1967, Paterson Catholic Regional High School, just minutes from downtown Paterson, New Jersey announced publicly Thursday morning that enormous debt will cause the institution to shut down at the end of the academic calendar year. A solid academic program with championship athletic teams, many of the hoops prospects profiled by NY2LASports.com will be affected by the decision.
Among the top players who will be forced to find new schools include rising senior Myles Mack (NY2LASports.com Class of 2011 Top 100), promising sophomore Kyle Anderson (NY2LASports.com Class of 2012 Top 10), and talented freshmen Reggie Cameron and Kavon Stewart. Division I-bound forwards Jayon James and Fuquan Edwin will be among the school’s final senior class, set to graduate in June of 2010.
The announcement comes right on the heels of the news that former Duke Blue Devil Roshown McLeod, a graduate of nearby St. Anthony’s, will take over the program at St. Benedict’s after former head coach Dan Hurley left to take over the reigns at Wagner College. Area powers that have also molded themselves into perennial hoops contenders on the national level, both St. Anthony’s and St. Benedict’s (because of reputation and proximity) are expected to join in on the recruiting battle soon to turn feeding frenzy over former Paterson athletes.
Ranked as high as third in the country at one point during the 2009-2010 high school season, Paterson Catholic boasts numerous basketball prospects on its impressive alumni list, most notably current Dallas Maverick Tim Thomas. Other former Paterson Catholic players include Kevin Freeman (UConn), Donald Hand (Virginia), Jordan Theodore (Seton Hall), Darryl Watkins (Syracuse), Marquis Webb (Rutgers), and DeShaun Williams (Syracuse) among others.
