The grassroots travel season kicks into full swing starting tomorrow as the 2010 July “live” evaluation period for Division 1 college coaches tips off across the country with teams and prospects set to take the floor through the end of the month with their sights set on impressing coaches and securing opportunities to play basketball after high school at the next level.  This is a crucial time for players of all levels as sometimes it only takes one big time performance to make your mark.  As important a time period as it is for the players, it’s equally important for the coaches who leave no stone unturned in their quest to add talent to their programs.  Here’s some news and notes of interest as we head into the period in July…


EVENT NOTES
The 2010 NY2LASPORTS.COM Next Level Invitational tips off July 6-9, 2010 at Homestead High School in Mequon, Wisconsin to teams from North Dakota, South Dakota, Arizona, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.  The 4th annual event features programs like the SYF Players, Arizona Premier, Playground Elite, Martin Brothers, Iowa Barnstormers, Kingdom Hoops, Wisconsin Playmakers, Milwaukee Spartans, Wisconsin Blizzard, Illinois Wolverines, Ferrari, Team NLP, Illinois Rising Stars, Howard Pulley, Net Gain Sports, Dakota Schoolers, etc.  Games start at 8 a.m. each day.  For a complete schedule to this year’s event CLICK HERE

The 2010 NY2LASPORTS.COM Summer Jam Invitational tips off July 12-15, 2010 and the field is expected to be better than last year’s which was one of the best in the entire country.  With powers from California, Texas, Georgia, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc. plus some HUGE additions to the 17U level, the tournament will be one of the top tournaments in the country this July.  The schedule for the event will be posted on July 10, 2010 by 5 p.m.   Feel free to contact me directly for a list of teams committed to this year’s event. PROSPECT NOTES OF INTEREST
6-3 2011 PG Conner Miller of Eau Claire Regis is now rumored to be playing with the Wisconsin Terror program this July.  They will be competing in the Next Level Invitational July 6-9, 2010.

6-6 2012 F Darrell Bowie is expected to play with the Illinois Rising Stars program during the month of July.  They will be competing in the Next Level Invitational July 6-9, 2010.

6-9 2012 F/C Phillip Nolan will play the month of July with the D.T.A. program.  They will participate in the Adidas Invitational July 6-8, 2010 before competing in the NY2LASPORTS.COM Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010.

6-6 2012 SF Jean-Pierre Tokoto is not expected to play in any tournaments during the early part of the July “live” evaluation period.   He is not injured, but the word on the street as of today is that he will not be playing during the early part of the period. 

6-3 2011 PG Joel Lindberg is expected to play with the Wisconsin Playmakers during the July “live” evaluation period.  They will be in attendance at the Next Level Invitational July 6-9, 2010 and also the Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010.

6-5 2011 G Josh Oglesby will play with the Iowa Barnstormers during the Next Level Invitational July 6-9, 2010 and the King James Summer Showcase July 9-11, 2010, and he is expected to play with the Iowa Mavericks during the Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010.

In case some of you did not notice this past weekend, 6-7 2011 SF Anthony Norris of Houston (TX) decided to re-open his recruitment.  Norris had previously committed to Memphis before withdrawing his verbal pledge.  Norris is a top 100 prospect nationally who competes with the Franchize All-Starz program during the grassroots travel season.  Franchize will take the court at the Adidas Invitational July 6-8, 2010 in Indianapolis and they will wrap up the period at the 2010 NY2LASPORTS.COM Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010 in Mequon, Wisconsin.  They feature a loaded group of talent including 6-3 2011 G Deangelo Harrison, 6-8 2012 PF Wannah Bail, 6-5 2012 G Michael Carey, etc.  

Strong indications from a number of sources in Indiana are that 6-5 2011 G/F Branden Dawson will be playing the month of July with the SYF Players.  Dawson has played with SYF throughout his prep career but did participate in two tournaments during the month of May with the Meanstreets program.  Dawson will participate in the Lebron James Skills Academy to kick off the period before joining the SYF team for the Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010 in Mequon, Wisconsin.  This information comes from multiple sources both regionally and nationally over the past month or so.

6-5 2011 F Marvin Singleton of Hopkins High School in Minnesota committed to Northern Iowa on Sunday.  Singleton is one of the top 2011 prospects in the state of Minnesota and he plays with the Howard Pulley Panthers program.

6-7 2011 SF Jakarr Sampson of St. Vincent St. Mary is quickly becoming one of the most coveted prospects in the country.  Sampson is an electric long skilled versatile athlete with tremendous upside who is currently regarded as a consensus top 25 prospect nationally.  Sampson plays with the King James Shooting Stars program during the grassroots travel season.  Sampson will be at the Lebron James Skills Academy before heading to Chicago to join his grassroots team for the King James Summer Showcase July 9-11, 2010 and then he will wrap the period in Mequon, Wisconsin at the NY2LASPORTS.COM Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010.

3 freshmen to really take a look at regionally during the month of July are 6-5 2013 SF Riley Dearing who will play with the Net Gain Sports program, 6-5 2013 SF Deonte Burton who plays with the TP Elite program, and 6-1 2013 G Duane Wilson Jr. who plays with the Playground Elite program.  All will be in attendance at both the Next Level Invitational and Summer Jam tournaments during the early part of the July “live” evaluation period.

Look for Mac Irvin to be another heavily watched program during the July “live” period as the Chicago power is expected to be bolstered by the addition of 6-6 2011 swingman Sam Thompson who sat out most of the spring.  Also expected to play up at times will be 6-6 2013 forward Jabari Parker, one of the top up and coming prospects in the country.  They’ll join the likes of Wayne Blackshear and Mike Shaw with the perennial power.  Blackshear, Shaw, and Thompson are all expected to participate at the Lebron James Skills Academy before taking part in the Division 1 Elite Boys Invitational and then will wrap the early period at the always strong Nike Peach Jam event in Georgia.  

6-5 2012 SF Elijah Ray of Bowman Academy in Indiana really showed up in Milwaukee this past weekend at the inaugural NY2LASPORTS.COM Futures Camp.  Ray was a dominance force throughout the weekend and is a must watch talent heading into the month of July.  Ray plays with the SYF Players who will be at both the Next Level Invitational and Summer Jam tournaments during the early part of the period.

6-8 2011 PF Greg Mays is quickly becoming one of the most talked about prospects in the region.  The athletic forward had a huge spring and is set to be one of the most watched bigs regionally during this crucial period.  Mays plays with the Illinois Wolverines who will compete in the Next Level Invitational July 6-9, 2010, then the King James Summer Showcase in Chicago (IL) July 9-11, 2010, before wrapping the period at the Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010.

The perennial power Atlanta Celtics 17U team which features the likes of Tennessee bound 2011 PG Kevin Ware, 6-8 2011 PF Nick Jacobs, and 6-7 F Dominique McCoy amongst others is set to take off starting tomorrow at the Adidas Invitational in Indianapolis, Indiana.   They will then return home to Atlanta for a local event before wrapping up the early part of the period at the NY2LASPORTS.COM Summer Jam July 12-15, 2010.  Only the 17U team will be in attendance at the Summer Jam while all other teams will participate in the events prior to that.

Last but not least you can expect the Dream Vision program to collect their fair share of attention as the California powerhouse is set to feature 6-9 2011 PF Angelo Chol, 6-2 2011 G Norman Powell, 6-5 2012 SF Shabazz Muhammad, 6-7 2012 F Winston Shepard, 6-2 2013 PG Tyree Robinson, 6-2 2013 G Tyrel Robinson, and 6-4 2013 SG Rashad Muhammad on their 17U and 16U teams this July.  The national power is set to take part in the Adidas Invitational July 6-8, 2010 in Indianapolis before wrapping the  period up at the NY2LASPORTS.COM Summer Jam event July 12-15, 2010 in Mequon, Wisconsin.
