With quality prospects comes quality teams and the 2011 NY2LA Sports Classic is filled with some exciting matchups as well on the boys and the girl’s side this weekend. Here’s a quick look at the full slate of games…
BOYS VARSITY (Fieldhouse)
Germantown vs. Dominican – 8:00 p.m.
The #1 ranked team in the WIAA for Division 1 schools tips off against the #1 ranked team in the WIAA for Division 1 schools as a plethora of top prospects hit the hardwood in this contest. Wisconsin bound Zak Showalter, senior PG Josh Mongan, senior F/C Dan Studer, and junior big man Luke Fischer lead the attack for the Warhawks. A stellar 1-2 backcourt punch of junior Duane Wilson Jr. and senior Jamall Taylor lead the charge for Dominican with the top freshman prospect in the state of Wisconsin Diamond Stone manning the interior. Fill in some strong underclass talent on both ends and big time perimeter shooting by both teams and on paper this could be an exciting back and forth game filled with offense.
Brookfield Central vs. Homestead – 6:15 p.m.
One of the pre-season top teams in the state in Central head to Homestead to take on one of the top surprises so far this season in the Highlanders in what promises to be an excellent matchup of two quality teams. Young sophomore Riley Lachance guides Central while senior wing Seth Mortag and senior big man Nick Olson serve as huge factors in the Central attack. On the flip side Homestead counters with a young squad led by junior big man Luke Worthington and sharpshooting junior wings James Reilly and Jake Laihinen. Mix in sophomore lead guard Lamonte Bearden and a crop of young prospects including, but not limited to, highly regarded freshman Jaylen Key and Homestead has plenty of weapons in this contest which should be an exciting matchup from start to finish.
Wisconsin Lutheran vs. Wauwatosa East – 4:30 p.m.
Two years removed from a state championship Head Coach Ryan Walz and the Vikings are in a bit of a rebuilding mold but as always they will be well coached and play hard on both ends of the court with senior guard Chris Golden and junior guard Deiondre Cunningham capable of creating problems for any opposing team. The Red Raiders will counter with junior wing Anthony Carroll and junior guard Marquise Carter along with a cast of solid upperclassmen in what looks like a solid and competitive contest early in the day.
West Allis Central vs. Nicolet – 2:45 p.m.
This one has some excellent backcourt play as Central is led by junior lead guard Jarvis Garrett and freshman Brandon Key while Nicolet counters with one of the top senior guards in the state in Corey Smith. Mix in names like senior F Najeal McMillian and senior F/C Tonnie Collier for Central and they bring a lot of firepower to the court when everything is clicking. Two key players in this one could be the likes of junior forwards Tyler Miller and Eugene Bonner for Nicolet as both has some solid potential and are part of a highly regarded junior class in the state of Wisconsin.
GIRLS VARSITY (Main Gym)
Racine Case vs. Beaver Dam – 8:00 p.m.
One of the top Division 1 teams in the state matches up with one of the premiere Division 3 teams this season. Case is led by senior forward Jameeka Bouie while senior guard Adella Randle El and senior center Asia Mosley make for a formidable trio. Add the solid play of senior guard JaToya Woods and Case looks primed to take aim at the Division 1 state title this season when they get rolling. Beaver Dam can hit you from a number of different directions with senior forward Erika Chitko powering an attack the also features senior forward Meagan Mazur, senior guard Cady Roedl, etc. Add junior center Kalyn Gebhardt to the attack and the Golden Beavers look primed to challenge for the Division 3 state championship at full strength. This one looks like one of the premiere girls matchups in the state so far this season.
Dominican vs. New Berlin West – 6:15 p.m.
The #1 ranked Division 3 girls team in the state Dominican brings their explosive offensive attack to this contest fueled by one of the premiere 1-2 punches in girls hoops this season in senior guard Dilonna Johnson and senior G/F Deysha Smith-Jenkins. Add junior guard Mishayla Jones to this mix and Dominican returns their three leading scorers from last season and look the part of the favorite to capture the Division 3 state championship on paper this season. While Dominican poses matchup problems on the perimeter, the Division 2 girls from New Berlin West bring a lot of size to the floor in what could be an excellent contrast of styles. Junior center Stephanie Turner powers the West Vikings attack while forward Rebecca Gasper and junior Beth Ver Haagh also serve as key figures in the West attack. This one should be an exciting contest with two solid programs who should figure as key players in the state tournament pictures for their respective divisions this season.
DSHA vs. Nicolet – 4:30 p.m.
The defending state champions from Nicolet head into this contest with DSHA in what is a matchup of two of the top 5-10 teams in Division 1 hoops this season. An extremely talented 1-2 combo of senior guard Brittney Fair and junior G/F Briana Gray power the Knights attack and they are always well coaches as they have one of the best on the sidelines in the Head Coach Corey Wolf. The Dashers feature junior G/F Maggie Novak, junior G/F Shaylan Reardon, and one of the top freshman in the state in G/F Arike Ogunbowale. On paper looks like a stellar matchup of two premiere programs in the state.
Oak Creek vs. West Allis Central – 2:45 p.m.
Regarded as one of the top 10 teams in the state for Division 1 schools early in the season, Oak Creek is led by senior G Abby Styczynski and sophomore forward Tamya Sims, two of the top players in the state for their respective classes. Mix in a cast of quality support like junior Morgan Kokta and the Knights promise to be a tough team to beat every time they take the floor. First year coach Trudy Whalen counters for the Bulldogs with senior G Mahryn Kraker and senior G April Wildes, one of the top backcourts in the state. Mix in some decent size with five players including junior forward Sierra Brown and Central could be a major force this season when everything comes together. This one should be an excellent early season test for both teams who look very strong on paper in this young season.
